1 KINGS 15 ‐ “Asa’s Reign in Judah”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Heart” it comes from the Hebrew Word “lebab” which means “heart.”

A string of kings comes and goes quickly, until one finally stands out for genuine faithfulness. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Kings 15.

Abijam succeeds Rehoboam in Judah, walking in his father’s sinful ways, though God preserves a lamp for David’s sake in Jerusalem because of his faithfulness. Abijam’s son Asa succeeds him and does what is right in the Lord’s eyes, removing the male prostitutes and idols his fathers had made, even removing his own grandmother Maachah from her position as queen mother for making an idol, which he cuts down and burns.

Though Asa fails to remove all the high places, his “heart,” “lebab” in Hebrew, is described as perfect with the Lord all his days. When Baasha, king of Israel, builds a fortress at Ramah threatening Judah, Asa sends the temple and palace treasures to Benhadad, king of Syria, persuading him to break his treaty with Israel and attack instead, forcing Baasha to abandon his fortification project.

Meanwhile, in the northern kingdom, Nadab succeeds his father Jeroboam but is assassinated by Baasha, who then exterminates Jeroboam’s entire household exactly as Ahijah had prophesied. Baasha himself reigns wickedly over Israel, continuing Jeroboam’s idolatrous practices, and the prophet Jehu pronounces similar judgment against his house as well, predicting the same fate that befell Jeroboam’s family. The chapter closes noting continual war between Asa and Baasha throughout both their reigns.

Asa’s heart being described as perfect with the Lord, despite failing to remove every high place, shows that genuine faithfulness doesn’t always mean flawless execution of every reform. His willingness to remove even his own grandmother’s influence for the sake of true worship demonstrates real courage in prioritizing God’s honor over family comfort.
