John writes these things so that they sin not, but if any man sins, they have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, He being the “propitiation,” “hilasmos” in Greek, for their sins, and not for theirs only, but also for the sins of the whole world, describing how they know they know Him, if they keep His commandments, whoever says he knows Him, and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
John writes to them as little children, since their sins are forgiven for His name’s sake, to fathers, since they have known Him who is from the beginning, to young men, since they have overcome the wicked one, urging them not to love the world, neither the things that are in the world, since if any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world, and the world passes away, and the lust thereof, but he who does the will of God abides forever.
John warns that even now there are many antichrists, describing how they went out from them, but were not of them, for if they had been of them, they would no doubt have continued with them, but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of them, urging them to let that abide in them which they have heard from the beginning, since if it abides in them, they also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father, closing with the promise this is the promise that He has promised them, even eternal life, and confidence that when He shall appear, they may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.
John’s identification of Christ as advocate and propitiation, one who both defends believers before the Father and satisfies the demand of justice for sin, offers comprehensive assurance addressing both accusation and genuine guilt. His threefold description of worldly temptation, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life, provides a memorable, practical framework for recognizing and resisting worldly desire in any era.
