Paul opens with a sweeping declaration that without love, “agape” in Greek, even the most impressive spiritual gifts amount to nothing. Speaking with the tongues of men and angels without love makes a person merely “sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.” Having the gift of prophecy, understanding all mysteries and knowledge, and even faith to move mountains, all mean nothing without love. Even giving away all his possessions to feed the poor, or surrendering his body to be burned, profits him nothing without love.
Paul then describes exactly what genuine love actually looks like in practice. “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” This detailed portrait describes love not primarily as a feeling, but as a consistent, patient, others-focused way of behaving.
Paul explains that love never fails, while prophecies, tongues, and knowledge will eventually pass away or cease, since present knowledge and prophecy remain partial and incomplete. He compares this to the difference between childhood and maturity, and to seeing dimly through a poor mirror versus seeing clearly face to face, promising that one day believers will know fully, even as they are fully known. Paul closes with one of Scripture’s most beloved conclusions. “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
Paul places this description of love directly between two chapters about spiritual gifts, making a pointed statement, gifts without love ultimately amount to nothing. Even the most extraordinary spiritual ability or sacrificial act, this chapter insists, needs genuine love as its actual foundation, or it accomplishes far less than it might appear to.
