In the middle of this extensive genealogical list, the text pauses specifically to highlight one man, Jabez, described as “more honourable than his brethren,” whose mother named him Jabez, meaning “sorrowful,” because she bore him with genuine sorrow.
Jabez calls on the God of Israel, praying earnestly, “Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!” This brief, specific “prayer,” “tefillah” in Hebrew, stands out remarkably within an otherwise dry genealogical list, and Scripture notes simply that “God granted him that which he requested.”
The chapter continues with the descendants of Simeon, Judah’s neighboring tribe, recording their cities, families, and a notable military campaign where five hundred Simeonites defeat the remaining Amalekites at Mount Seir, settling permanently in their conquered territory, illustrating that even within these long genealogical records, God’s people continued actively working out their inheritance in the land, generation after generation.
