The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Rest” it comes from the Hebrew Word “menuchah” which means “rest, a resting place.”
Knowing he will never build the temple himself, David spends his final years preparing everything for his son to complete it. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Chronicles 22.
Recognizing that Ornan’s threshingfloor is destined to be the site of the Lord’s temple, David begins gathering strangers living in Israel to work as stonecutters, preparing enormous quantities of iron, bronze, and cedar wood from Tyre and Sidon, stockpiling materials on a truly massive scale, “abundantly, for David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical.”
David explains to Solomon that he himself intended to build a house for the name of the Lord, but God told him he could not, since he had shed much blood and fought great wars, though God promised that a son born to him would be a man of “rest,” “menuchah” in Hebrew, and would build this house instead, since his name would be Solomon, meaning peace, and God would give peace and quietness to Israel throughout his days.
David charges Solomon directly to build this house for the Lord, promising him wisdom and understanding if he keeps God’s law faithfully, and to be strong and of good courage, unafraid, since the Lord God is with him. David then charges all the princes of Israel to help Solomon, reminding them that the Lord has given them rest on every side and delivered the land’s inhabitants into their hand, urging them to now set their heart and soul to seek the Lord and help build His sanctuary.
David’s willingness to spend his final years preparing materials for a project he himself would never actually build shows real, selfless investment in a legacy meant to benefit others long after he was gone. His extensive preparation ensured Solomon could focus entirely on construction itself, a father’s practical, generous gift to his son’s future calling.
