As David’s kingdom grows stronger, he faces down the Philistines not once, but twice. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Chronicles 14.
Hiram, king of Tyre, sends materials and craftsmen to build David a house, and David recognizes that the Lord has established him as king over Israel, exalting his kingdom for the sake of His people. David takes more wives in Jerusalem, and several more sons and daughters are born to him, continuing his growing “house,” “bayith” in Hebrew, and dynasty.
When the Philistines hear David has become king over all Israel, they come seeking to capture him, but David inquires of the Lord and receives a promise of victory, defeating them decisively and burning their abandoned idols rather than keeping them as previous kings might have done. When the Philistines attack again, David inquires of the Lord once more, and this time God instructs a different strategy, waiting for the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees before attacking.
David obeys exactly as instructed, and Israel strikes the Philistine army from Gibeon all the way to Gazer, and David’s fame spreads throughout all the surrounding lands, with the Lord bringing the fear of him upon every nation around them. This consistent pattern of David inquiring of the Lord before every major decision, rather than assuming previous success guaranteed future strategy, becomes a defining characteristic of his faithful reign throughout Chronicles.
David’s practice of inquiring of the Lord even before a second battle against the very same enemy shows real, ongoing dependence rather than simply repeating whatever worked previously. His willingness to seek fresh guidance each time, rather than relying on formula, reflects genuine spiritual attentiveness worth noticing throughout his entire, generally faithful reign.
