The chapter lists warriors who joined David even while he was still hiding from Saul at Ziklag, including skilled Benjamite archers and slingers, some of them Saul’s own kinsmen, remarkably choosing loyalty to David over their tribal connection to Saul. Gadite warriors also join him, described as men of valor fit for war, “whose faces were like the faces of lions,” swift as gazelles upon the mountains.
Even some men from Benjamin and Judah come to David while he remains at the stronghold, and though he initially questions their intentions, suspecting a possible betrayal, the Spirit comes upon Amasai, their leader, who declares their complete loyalty, “Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee.” David welcomes them and makes them leaders of his growing forces.
The chapter closes with an extensive summary of the enormous army that eventually gathers at Hebron to make David king over all Israel, “understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do,” describing warriors from every single tribe joining together with one unified purpose, and celebrating together with David for three days with great joy, since Israel had prepared for this celebration.
This chapter’s careful documentation of loyal warriors from every tribe, even those with reason to remain suspicious or divided, shows a nation genuinely coming together with shared purpose around David’s leadership. The phrase describing men who understood the times, knowing exactly what Israel ought to do, remains a fitting description of discerning, well-timed loyalty.
