All Israel gathers to David at Hebron, acknowledging that even while Saul reigned, David was the one truly leading Israel, and that the Lord had promised he would shepherd God’s people. They anoint David king exactly as the Lord had spoken through Samuel, and David captures Jerusalem’s stronghold from the Jebusites, calling it the city of David, growing continually greater “because the LORD of hosts was with him.”
The chapter introduces David’s “mighty men,” “gibborim” in Hebrew, describing their extraordinary exploits in vivid detail. Jashobeam kills three hundred men at once, and three of David’s mightiest warriors break through Philistine lines during his exile just to bring him water from Bethlehem’s well, water David refuses to drink himself, pouring it out to the Lord instead since it represented these men’s risked blood.
The chapter lists numerous additional mighty men and their individual feats of valor, including Benaiah, who kills a lion in a pit on a snowy day and defeats an Egyptian giant with the giant’s own spear, establishing the loyal, extraordinarily capable core of warriors who supported David throughout his rise to Israel’s throne, forming the foundation of military strength that would characterize much of his eventual reign.
The loyalty and extraordinary courage of David’s mighty men, willing to risk their lives even for something as simple as bringing him water during his exile, reveals the kind of devoted following genuine, God-honored leadership can inspire. David’s own response, refusing to drink water purchased at such cost, shows he understood and honored exactly what that loyalty had cost them.
