The Philistines defeat Israel decisively at Mount Gilboa, killing Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. As the battle intensifies against Saul himself, archers wound him severely, and fearing capture and mockery, Saul falls on his own sword and dies, along with his armorbearer, who follows his king’s example rather than fall into enemy hands.
The Philistines find Saul’s body, cut off his head, and hang his body and his sons’ bodies on the wall of Bethshan, but the valiant men of Jabeshgilead retrieve them by night and give them honorable burial, fasting seven days in mourning for their fallen king, exactly as recorded earlier in the book of Samuel.
Chronicles adds its own theological summary, absent from the earlier account, explaining precisely why Saul died. “So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.” This “transgression,” “ma’al” in Hebrew, becomes the immediate transition point launching directly into David’s reign, the true focus of Chronicles from this point forward.
Chronicles’ added theological summary, explaining Saul’s death as direct consequence for unfaithfulness and improper reliance on forbidden spiritual practices rather than genuine dependence on God, sets the tone for how this entire book will interpret Israel’s history. Every king’s success or failure throughout Chronicles traces directly back to this same simple, consistent measure, faithfulness to the Lord.
