Galatians defends a simple but essential truth under direct attack: that people are made right with God through faith in Jesus, not through keeping religious rules. Paul opens with unusual urgency, skipping his typical warm greetings entirely and expressing genuine alarm that the Galatians are already turning toward “another gospel,” which, he insists, is really no gospel at all. Certain teachers had convinced Gentile believers that faith in Jesus alone was not enough, insisting they also needed to follow Jewish law, especially circumcision, to be truly saved. Paul defends his own authority as coming directly from Christ, not secondhand from other apostles, recounting his own dramatic conversion from zealous persecutor to preacher, and his years spent independently before ever meeting the apostles in Jerusalem, as proof his message was not borrowed from anyone else.
Chapter two describes Paul publicly confronting Peter in Antioch for backing away from fellowship with Gentile believers under pressure from legalistic visitors, a hypocrisy Paul refused to let slide. He restates the letter’s central conviction plainly: “a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ.”
Chapter three argues from Abraham’s own example, since Abraham was declared righteous by faith long before the law even existed. Paul describes the law’s real purpose as a temporary guardian pointing people toward Christ, not a permanent system for earning God’s favor, and declares a striking new unity found in Him: “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Chapter four describes believers as adopted children and heirs rather than slaves, using the Old Testament story of Hagar and Sarah as a picture contrasting slavery under the law with freedom found in God’s promise.
Chapter five delivers one of the letter’s most direct commands: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” The Greek word behind this freedom is “eleutheria,” describing genuine liberty rather than mere permission. Paul then contrasts the destructive “works of the flesh” with the beautiful “fruit of the Spirit,” love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, growing naturally in a life guided by God’s Spirit rather than self-effort.
The book closes in chapter six with practical instruction to gently restore those who stumble, to bear one another’s burdens, and to keep doing good without growing weary, along with a reminder that “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Paul takes the pen himself to write the closing lines in large letters, insisting once more that neither circumcision nor its absence matters anymore, only becoming an entirely “new creature” in Christ, and closing with a note that he bears “the marks of the Lord Jesus” in his own body from all he has suffered for this gospel.
Galatians refuses to let the gospel quietly slide back into a system of earning God’s approval through rule-keeping. Paul defends Christian freedom fiercely, not as permission to live carelessly, but as the very foundation that allows love, joy, and genuine transformation to grow naturally instead of being forced. Galatians reminds us that faith was never meant to be supplemented with extra requirements. Christ’s finished work is already enough.
