John addresses this letter to “the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth,” expressing genuine joy over finding some of this woman’s children “walking in truth,” and reminds her of the command believers have carried “from the beginning,” to love one another, insisting that genuine love means walking according to God’s commandments rather than merely feeling affection. The Greek word “aletheia,” meaning “truth,” appears repeatedly through this short letter, describing not just correct information but a whole way of life shaped by genuine reality rather than deception.
John warns specifically about “many deceivers” already active in the world who refuse to acknowledge that “Jesus Christ is come in the flesh,” calling anyone teaching this “a deceiver and an antichrist.” He gives a direct, practical instruction: do not welcome such a teacher into your home or even offer them a greeting, since doing so would make you a participant in their harmful teaching.
John closes by expressing his hope to visit in person soon rather than writing everything down, “that our joy may be full,” sending closing greetings from “the children of thy elect sister” as well.
Second John shows genuine love and doctrinal discernment working together rather than against each other. Hospitality and kindness matter deeply throughout John’s writings, but so does protecting a church from teaching that distorts who Jesus actually is. Second John reminds us that real love sometimes means being careful about who we amplify and welcome, especially when the truth about Christ Himself is at stake.
