The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Return” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shuv” which means “to return, turn back.”

Jeremiah describes a coming devastation so complete that bones shall be brought out of graves, and spread before the sun, the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, served, and worshiped, since death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of those who remain, asking whether when men fall, they do not arise, and when one turns away, does he not “return,” “shuv” in Hebrew.
Jeremiah laments that this people has turned away in a perpetual backsliding, holding fast deceit, refusing to return, describing how he hearkened and heard, but they spoke not right, no man repented of his wickedness, saying, what have I done, everyone turning to his course, as the horse rushes into the battle, describing how even the stork in the heaven knows her appointed times, and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming, but His people know not the judgment of the Lord.
Jeremiah asks how they can say they are wise, and the law of the Lord is with them, when the false pen of the scribes has worked falsely, describing how the wise men are ashamed, dismayed, and taken, since they have rejected the word of the Lord, and what wisdom is in them, since from the least even to the greatest, everyone is given to covetousness, and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely, healing the hurt of the daughter of His people slightly, saying, peace, peace, when there is no peace, closing with Jeremiah’s own devastating grief, “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” and his famous lament, “the harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.”
Jeremiah’s poignant observation, even the stork and swallow know their appointed migration times, yet God’s own people fail to recognize His clear judgment, uses ordinary nature’s faithful consistency to highlight humanity’s genuinely puzzling capacity for willful spiritual blindness. His famous lament, is there no balm in Gilead, gives voice to genuine, personal heartbreak over a nation’s self-inflicted, entirely preventable suffering.
