Jeremiah is instructed to stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there, urging those who enter these gates to worship the Lord to amend their ways and their doings, and He will cause them to dwell in this place, warning them not to trust in lying words, saying, “The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these,” but truly to amend their ways and their doings, execute “judgment,” “mishpat” in Hebrew, between a man and his neighbor.
Jeremiah delivers a pointed indictment, asking whether they will steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods they know not, and then come and stand before Him in this house, which is called by His name, and say, we are delivered to do all these abominations, asking whether this house, which is called by His name, has become a den of robbers in their eyes, urging them to go to His place in Shiloh, where He set His name at first, and see what He did to it for the wickedness of His people Israel.
Jeremiah is told not to pray for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to Him, for He will not hear them, describing how the children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, provoking Him to anger, closing with a devastating description of a coming judgment so complete that the valley of the son of Hinnom shall be called the valley of slaughter, since they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place, urging them instead to hear this word, “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me,” a message actually delivered in the following chapters of this book.
Jeremiah’s famous warning against trusting mere repetition of the temple of the Lord, three times over, exposes how easily religious buildings and rituals can become superstitious talismans rather than genuine sources of accountability and transformation. His startling instruction not to pray for this people reveals judgment’s genuine seriousness once persistent, willful rebellion has moved beyond the point where continued intercession would still prove effective.
