Jeremiah urges the children of Benjamin to gather themselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, blowing the trumpet in Tekoa, and setting up a sign of fire in Bethhaccerem, for evil appears out of the north, and great “destruction,” “shever” in Hebrew, describing how he has likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman, the shepherds with their flocks coming to her, pitching their tents against her round about.
Jeremiah describes God’s command to glean the remnant of Israel thoroughly, as a grapegatherer over the branches, urging them to hearken, since from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness, and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely, healing the hurt of the daughter of His people slightly, saying, peace, peace, when there is no peace, urging them, “Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls,” yet they said, we will not walk therein.
Jeremiah describes God setting watchmen over them, saying, hearken to the sound of the trumpet, but they said, we will not hearken, therefore hear, ye nations, and know their assembly, since He will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened to His words, nor to His law, but rejected it, asking to what purpose incense comes from Sheba, and sweet cane from a far country, since their burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor their sacrifices sweet to Him, closing with God’s declaration that He will lay stumblingblocks before this people, the fathers and the sons together stumbling upon them, the neighbor and his friend perishing.
Jeremiah’s memorable invitation, stand in the ways and ask for the old paths where the good way is, and walk in it, urges genuine, deliberate consideration of proven, tested wisdom rather than reckless novelty for its own sake. His diagnosis of Judah’s false prophets, healing the wound of the people slightly, saying peace, peace, when there is no peace, exposes how comforting but dishonest reassurance ultimately worsens genuine crisis rather than resolving it.
