Jeremiah delivers God’s invitation, that if Israel will return, let them return to Him, and if they will put away their abominations out of His sight, then shall they not remove, urging the men of Judah and Jerusalem to circumcise themselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of their “heart,” “lev” in Hebrew, lest His fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it.
Jeremiah describes a devastating vision of coming invasion, a lion coming up from his thicket, a destroyer of nations setting forth from his place, to make the land desolate, urging them to gird themselves with sackcloth, lament and howl, since the fierce anger of the Lord has not turned back from them, describing how at that day the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes, the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder, Jeremiah’s own heart being pained within him, his heart making a noise in him, unable to hold his peace, hearing the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
Jeremiah describes looking at the earth, and it being without form, and void, and the heavens, they having no light, looking upon the mountains, and they trembling, and all the hills moving lightly, describing every city being forsaken, and no man dwelling in them, asking why the whole land should be desolate, though Jerusalem is destroyed, she yet clothes herself with crimson, decking herself with ornaments of gold, painting her eyes, in vain making herself fair, her lovers despising her, and seeking her life, Jeremiah describing hearing a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion bewailing herself, spreading her hands, since her soul is wearied because of murderers.
Jeremiah’s call to circumcise the heart rather than merely maintaining outward ritual insists that genuine repentance must reach into the deepest, most inward part of a person rather than remaining a superficial, external adjustment alone. His own genuine, personal anguish while delivering this devastating message, my heart is pained within me, reveals the real emotional cost prophets bore in faithfully proclaiming difficult truth rather than remaining detached, unaffected messengers.
