Jeremiah records God’s question, that if a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man’s, shall he return to her again, asking whether that land would not be greatly polluted, yet Israel has played the harlot with many lovers, urging her to return to Him, describing how she has lifted up her eyes to every green tree, and there has played the “harlot,” “zanah” in Hebrew, describing how despite this, God still calls to her, “Return, thou backsliding Israel… for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.”
Jeremiah describes how in the days of King Josiah, God said to him, that backsliding Israel has committed adultery, He had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also, describing how through the lightness of her whoredom she defiled the land, yet He still calls, “Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you,” promising to give them pastors according to His heart, who shall feed them with knowledge and understanding.
Jeremiah describes a coming day when they shall no more say, the ark of the covenant of the Lord, neither shall it come to mind, neither shall they remember it, neither shall they visit it, neither shall that be done any more, describing how at that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, urging them to acknowledge their iniquity, that they have transgressed against the Lord their God, closing with a direct, urgent call, “Return, ye backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you,” and Israel’s expected response, “Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.”
God’s repeated, urgent invitation, return, you backsliding children, for I am married to you, reveals genuine covenant faithfulness that continues extending forgiveness even amid persistent, repeated unfaithfulness on Israel’s part. His striking metaphor, comparing Israel’s idolatry to marital infidelity, communicates covenant betrayal’s genuine emotional weight through language every reader could immediately, personally understand.
