Jeremiah records God’s tender remembrance, “I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown,” describing Israel as holiness to the Lord, the firstfruits of His increase, asking what iniquity their fathers found in Him, that they went far from Him, and walked after “vanity,” “hevel” in Hebrew, and became vain.
Jeremiah describes God’s astonishment, that His people have committed two evils, they have forsaken Him, the fountain of living waters, and hewed themselves out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water, asking whether Israel is a servant, or a homeborn slave, why then is he spoiled, the young lions roaring upon him, and yelling, making his land waste, his cities burned without inhabitant, describing how they have forsaken the Lord their God, when He led them by the way.
Jeremiah delivers God’s pointed challenge, asking them to see and know that it is an evil thing and bitter that they have forsaken the Lord their God, and His fear is not in them, describing their persistent idolatry, saying to a stock, thou art my father, and to a stone, thou hast brought me forth, for they have turned their back to Him, and not their face, yet in the time of their trouble they will say, arise, and save us, asking where their gods are that they made for themselves, closing with God’s lament that in vain He has smitten their children, they received no correction, their own sword devouring their prophets like a destroying lion.
God’s tender memory of Israel’s early devotion, the kindness of your youth and the love of your espousals, reveals genuine relational longing rather than mere abstract disappointment over broken religious rules. His striking image, forsaking the fountain of living waters for broken cisterns that cannot even hold water, illustrates the genuine absurdity of abandoning real, life-giving relationship for self-made, ultimately worthless substitutes.
