Isaiah promises Zion a new name reflecting God’s genuine delight and covenant faithfulness. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 62.
Isaiah declares for Zion’s sake he will not hold his peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake he will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns, the Gentiles seeing her righteousness, and all kings her glory, she being called by a new “name,” “shem” in Hebrew, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.
Isaiah declares she shall no more be termed Forsaken, neither shall her land any more be termed Desolate, but she shall be called Hephzibah, meaning My delight is in her, and her land Beulah, meaning Married, for the Lord delights in her, and her land shall be married, since as a young man marries a virgin, so shall her sons marry her, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall her God rejoice over her.
Isaiah describes watchmen set upon Jerusalem’s walls, who shall never hold their peace day nor night, urging those who make mention of the Lord to keep not silence, and give Him no rest, till He establishes, and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth, describing the Lord’s oath, no longer giving their grain to be food for their enemies, closing with instructions to go through, go through the gates, prepare the way of the people, casting up the highway, gathering out the stones, lifting up a standard for the people, the Lord proclaiming to the end of the world, “Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him,” they being called The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord, a city sought out, not forsaken.
Isaiah’s beautiful renaming, from Forsaken and Desolate to Hephzibah, meaning my delight is in her, captures genuine, transformed identity flowing directly from restored covenant relationship rather than mere circumstantial improvement. His comparison of God’s joy over His people to a bridegroom’s rejoicing over his bride offers a beautifully personal, intimate picture of divine delight rather than mere distant, dutiful obligation.
