Isaiah declares, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable “year,” “shanah” in Hebrew, of the LORD,” a passage Jesus Himself reads aloud in the synagogue at Nazareth, declaring its fulfillment in Himself.
Isaiah describes appointing to those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified, describing how they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
Isaiah describes how strangers shall stand and feed their flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be their plowmen and vinedressers, but they shall be named the priests of the Lord, men shall call them the ministers of their God, they shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall they boast themselves, closing with a declaration of great joy, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments… For as the earth bringeth forth her bud… so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.”
This chapter’s opening declaration, the Spirit of the Lord is upon me to preach good tidings, gains extraordinary significance from Jesus’s own dramatic reading of this exact passage in His hometown synagogue, explicitly claiming its fulfillment in Himself. Its beautiful exchange, beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, offers genuine hope that God’s redemptive work transforms genuine grief into something entirely, wonderfully different rather than simply removing it.
