Isaiah envisions Zion’s glorious future, drawing nations and their wealth toward her radiant light. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 60.
Isaiah declares, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising,” describing how the multitude of camels shall cover Zion, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah, all bringing “gold,” “zahav” in Hebrew, and incense, showing forth the praises of the Lord.
Isaiah describes flocks of Kedar being gathered together, the rams of Nebaioth ministering to them, coming up with acceptance on His altar, and He will glorify the house of His glory, asking who these are who fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows, describing how the isles shall wait for Him, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring their sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, to the name of the Lord their God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because He has glorified them.
Isaiah describes how the sons of strangers shall build up their walls, and their kings shall minister to them, their gates also shall be open continually, that men may bring to them the forces of the Gentiles, describing how the nation and kingdom that will not serve them shall perish, promising the sun shall be no more their light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light to them, but the Lord shall be to them an everlasting light, and their God their glory, closing with the promise that their people also shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of His planting, the work of His hands, that He may be glorified.
Isaiah’s radiant vision, Zion’s light drawing nations and kings from every direction, offers a beautiful picture of restoration so complete and attractive that it naturally draws others toward it rather than requiring force or coercion. This chapter’s promise that God Himself will be their everlasting light, no longer needing sun or moon, provides a stunning anticipation of the new creation’s ultimate, complete illumination described later in Revelation.
