Isaiah urges the barren, who did not bear, to sing, breaking forth into singing, and crying aloud, she who did not travail with child, since more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, urging them to enlarge the place of their tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of their habitations, not sparing, lengthening their cords, and strengthening their “stakes,” “yated” in Hebrew, since they shall break forth on the right hand and on the left, their seed inheriting the Gentiles. Isaiah urges them not to fear, for they shall not be ashamed, neither be confounded, for they shall not be put to shame, since they shall forget the shame of their youth, and not remember the reproach of their widowhood any more, since their Maker is their husband, the Lord of hosts being His name, and their Redeemer the Holy One of Israel, describing how for a small moment He has forsaken them, but with great mercies He will gather them, in a little wrath He hid His face from them for a moment, but with everlasting kindness He will have mercy on them, saith the Lord their Redeemer. Isaiah compares this to the waters of Noah, since as He has sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so He has sworn that He would not be angry with them, nor rebuke them, describing how the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, but His kindness shall not depart from them, neither shall the covenant of His peace be removed, closing with a beautiful promise of a rebuilt, precious city, foundations laid with sapphires, gates of carbuncles, and all her borders of pleasant stones, all her children being taught of the Lord, and great being the peace of her children, no weapon formed against them prospering, and every tongue that rises against them in judgment being condemned, this being the heritage of the servants of the Lord.
Isaiah’s tender comparison, God’s covenant faithfulness being as sure as His promise never again to flood the earth, offers genuinely reassuring stability grounded in a promise history has already thoroughly confirmed and validated. This chapter’s beloved declaration, no weapon formed against you shall prosper, has offered enduring, practical comfort to believers across countless generations facing genuine opposition and threat.
