The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Nakedness” it comes from the Hebrew Word “ervah” which means “nakedness, shame.”
Isaiah pronounces Babylon’s humiliating fall despite her confident trust in sorcery and wisdom. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 47.
Isaiah urges the virgin daughter of Babylon to come down, and sit in the dust, sitting on the ground without a throne, no longer being called tender and delicate, taking the millstones, and grinding meal, uncovering her locks, making bare the leg, uncovering the thigh, and passing over the rivers, her “nakedness,” “ervah” in Hebrew, being uncovered, yes, her shame being seen, God taking vengeance, and not meeting her as a man.
Isaiah describes how God was angry with His people, He has polluted His inheritance, and given them into Babylon’s hand, she showing them no mercy, laying a very heavy yoke upon the ancient, saying she shall be a lady forever, so that she did not lay these things to her heart, nor remember the latter end of it, urging her, who gives herself to pleasures, who dwells carelessly, who says in her heart, I am, and none else beside me, I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children, to know these two things shall come to her in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood.
Isaiah declares these things shall come upon her in their perfection for the multitude of her sorceries, and for the great abundance of her enchantments, since she trusted in her wickedness, and said none sees her, her wisdom and her knowledge perverting her, urging her to stand now with her enchantments, and with the multitude of her sorceries, in which she has labored from her youth, since she is wearied in the multitude of her counsels, letting now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators stand up, and save her from the things that shall come upon her, closing with the observation that they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them, they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame.
Isaiah’s dramatic reversal, the proud virgin daughter of Babylon reduced to grinding meal and sitting in the dust, illustrates how quickly confident, comfortable power can collapse when it forgets genuine dependence on God. His mocking challenge to Babylon’s astrologers and sorcerers, urging them to save her if they truly can, exposes the ultimate powerlessness of occult practices when actually tested against real, decisive crisis.
