Isaiah delivers God’s word to Cyrus, His anointed, whose right hand He has holden, to subdue nations before him, loosing the loins of kings, opening before him the two leaved gates, describing how He will go before him, and make the crooked places straight, breaking in pieces the gates of brass, and cutting in sunder the bars of “iron,” “barzel” in Hebrew, giving him the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that he may know that it is the Lord who calls him by name, the God of Israel.
Isaiah declares God does this for Jacob His servant’s sake, and Israel His elect, calling Cyrus by name, even though he has not known Him, declaring, “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me… I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things,” urging the heavens to drop down from above, and the skies to pour down righteousness, letting the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation.
Isaiah warns against striving with one’s Maker, a potsherd striving with the potsherds of the earth, asking whether the clay should say to him who fashions it, what are you making, describing woe to him who says to his father, what are you begetting, or to the woman, what have you brought forth, declaring, “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else,” promising that to Him every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear, language the New Testament directly applies to Christ, closing with the assurance that in the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.
Isaiah’s declaration that God calls Cyrus by name even though Cyrus does not yet know Him reveals God’s sovereign purposes extending genuinely beyond those who consciously recognize or serve Him, working through even unwitting instruments to accomplish His purposes. This chapter’s universal invitation, look to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, offers a genuinely comprehensive call to salvation reaching every nation rather than remaining narrowly confined to Israel alone.
