Hezekiah, hearing this, tears his clothes, covers himself with sackcloth, and goes into the house of the Lord, sending his officials to Isaiah the prophet, who responds with the Lord’s word, urging them not to be afraid of the words they have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Him, since God will send a “blast,” “ruach” in Hebrew, meaning spirit or wind, upon him, and he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land, where he shall fall by the sword.
When Sennacherib sends a threatening letter, Hezekiah goes up to the house of the Lord, and spreads it before the Lord, praying earnestly, “O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear… open thine eyes, O LORD, and see… Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.”
Isaiah sends word that the Lord has heard Hezekiah’s prayer, and delivers a taunting prophecy against Sennacherib, describing how the virgin daughter of Zion has despised him, laughed him to scorn, promising that he shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, since God will defend this city to save it, for His own sake, and for His servant David’s sake, and that very night the angel of the Lord goes out, and smites in the camp of the Assyrians 185,000, so when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses, Sennacherib departing and returning to Nineveh, where he is later killed by his own sons while worshiping in the house of his god, this remarkable, decisive deliverance vindicating Hezekiah’s genuine trust in the Lord.
Hezekiah’s response to this terrifying threat, spreading the actual letter before the Lord in the temple, models bringing tangible, specific fears directly and honestly before God rather than merely worrying privately alone. This chapter’s dramatic, overnight deliverance, 185,000 enemy soldiers struck down in a single night, stands as one of Scripture’s most decisive demonstrations that God’s power vastly exceeds even the most overwhelming earthly military threat.
