Isaiah pronounces woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, describing a mighty and strong one from the Lord, like a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, casting down to the earth with the hand, this crown of pride being trodden under feet, describing how the drunkards of Ephraim, priest and prophet erring through strong drink, being swallowed up of wine, are out of the way through strong “drink,” “shekar” in Hebrew, erring in vision, stumbling in judgment. Isaiah describes how all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean, asking whom He shall teach knowledge, and whom He shall make to understand doctrine, those weaned from milk, and drawn from breasts, since it must be precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, and there a little, declaring, “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste,” a verse the New Testament directly applies to Christ as the cornerstone of God’s redemptive plan. Isaiah illustrates God’s wisdom through the farmer’s example, describing how the plowman does not plow all day to sow, but opens and breaks the clods of his ground, sowing the fitches, and casting in the principal wheat, and the appointed barley, and the rye in their place, for his God instructs him to discretion, and teaches him, describing how fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, nor a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin, but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod, closing with the observation that this also comes from the Lord of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
Isaiah’s foundational prophecy, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone laid in Zion, whoever believes shall not be in haste, offers one of Scripture’s most direct messianic prophecies, applied explicitly to Christ throughout the New Testament as the sure foundation for genuine faith. His memorable agricultural illustration, comparing God’s varied teaching methods to a farmer’s varied harvesting techniques, shows that wisdom often requires patient, methodical, repeated instruction rather than expecting immediate, complete understanding all at once.
