Isaiah declares that in that day the Lord with His sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing “serpent,” “nachash” in Hebrew, even leviathan that crooked serpent, and He shall slay the dragon that is in the sea, describing a vineyard of red wine, the Lord keeping it, watering it every moment, lest any hurt it, He will keep it night and day.
Isaiah declares fury is not in Him, though briers and thorns be against Him in battle, He would go through them, He would burn them together, or let them take hold of His strength, that they may make peace with Him, and they shall make peace with Him, describing how He shall cause those who come of Jacob to take root, Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.
Isaiah asks whether God has smitten Israel as He smote those who smote them, describing this as the way He will purge the iniquity of Jacob, taking away his sin, when he makes all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images not standing up, closing with a beautiful vision of ingathering, “it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem,” this chapter’s imagery of a tended vineyard and gathered exiles offering genuine hope of restoration following such extensive prophesied judgment.
Isaiah’s promise that God will punish leviathan, the cosmic serpent, alongside His tender care for the vineyard of His people illustrates how the same God who defeats ultimate spiritual evil also lovingly, personally tends His own people day and night. This chapter’s beautiful closing vision of a great trumpet gathering exiles from Assyria and Egypt to worship together at Jerusalem anticipates genuine, joyful reunion following long seasons of scattered exile.
