Isaiah describes how the Lord makes the earth empty, and makes it waste, turning it upside down, and scattering abroad its inhabitants, the land being defiled under its inhabitants, since they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, therefore the curse devouring the earth, and those who dwell in it being desolate, few men being left.
Isaiah describes the earth mourning and fading away, the world languishing and fading away, the haughty people of the earth languishing, the earth also being defiled under its inhabitants, all joy being darkened, the mirth of the land being gone, the city of confusion being broken down, every house being shut up, that no man may come in, there being a crying for wine in the streets, all joy being darkened, the mirth of the land being gone.
Isaiah describes fear, the pit, and the snare, being upon those who dwell on earth, whoever flees from the noise of the fear falling into the pit, and whoever comes up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare, since the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth shake, the earth being utterly broken down, clean dissolved, moved exceedingly, reeling to and fro like a drunkard, describing how in that day the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth, closing with a promise that the Lord of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before His ancients gloriously, this chapter’s sweeping, cosmic scope of judgment ultimately giving way to confident hope in God’s glorious, unshakeable reign.
This chapter’s sweeping, almost cosmic description of judgment, the entire earth reeling like a drunkard, extends beyond any single nation’s downfall to describe consequences of a genuinely broken covenant affecting the whole created order. Its closing pivot toward God’s glorious reign in Zion demonstrates that even the most extensive judgment ultimately serves God’s larger purpose of establishing His own righteous, unshakeable kingdom.
