Isaiah performs a startling symbolic act to warn against trusting Egypt for military security. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 20.
Isaiah records that in the year Tartan came to Ashdod, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, and fought against it and took it, at the same time the Lord spoke by Isaiah, saying, “Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot,” and he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
Isaiah records the Lord’s explanation, that just as His servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years for a “sign,” “oth” in Hebrew, and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia, so shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
Isaiah describes how they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory, the inhabitant of this isle saying in that day, “Behold, such is our expectation, whither we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?” this brief but striking chapter using Isaiah’s own dramatic, uncomfortable act of public humiliation to vividly warn Judah against placing its trust in Egypt’s military alliance rather than in the Lord.
Isaiah’s willingness to walk naked and barefoot for three years as a living, embodied warning demonstrates genuine, costly prophetic obedience that went far beyond mere verbal proclamation to include real personal sacrifice. This dramatic sign’s underlying message, warning against trusting Egypt’s military alliance, reinforces this section’s consistent theme that genuine security comes only from trusting God rather than shifting political alliances.
