Isaiah delivers the burden of Damascus, describing how Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap, the cities of Aroer being forsaken, they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid, the “fortress,” “mivtsar” in Hebrew, also ceasing from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus.
Isaiah describes how in that day the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean, comparing this to a harvest when the harvestman gathers the corn, and reaps the ears with his arm, yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, describing how at that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah describes how they have not looked to the maker of it, neither had respect to Him who fashioned it long ago, describing many nations rushing like the rushing of many waters, yet God rebuking them, and they fleeing far off, chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind, describing how at evening time trouble comes, and before the morning he is not, this being the portion of those who spoil them, and the lot of those who rob them, this chapter’s central theme, that genuine security comes only from remembering and trusting the Maker rather than earthly alliances or power.
Isaiah’s central observation, that people would finally look to their Maker only once earthly securities like Damascus’s alliance had utterly failed, reveals how genuine crisis can sometimes redirect misplaced trust back toward its proper, rightful object. His vivid image comparing the enemy’s swift defeat to chaff blown before the wind offers assurance that hostile powers, however overwhelming they initially appear, remain genuinely subject to God’s greater sovereign power.
