Isaiah delivers the burden of Babylon, which he saw, lifting up a banner upon the high mountain, and calling for the mighty ones of God’s anger, even those who rejoice in His highness, describing a noise of a multitude in the mountains, like a great people, a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together, the Lord of hosts mustering the host of the “battle,” “milchamah” in Hebrew.
Isaiah describes the day of the Lord coming as destruction from the Almighty, all hands being faint, and every man’s heart melting, they being afraid, pangs and sorrows taking hold of them, they being in pain as a woman who travails, describing the stars of heaven and their constellations not giving their light, the sun being darkened, and the moon not causing her light to shine, God punishing the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity, causing the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and laying low the haughtiness of the terrible.
Isaiah describes Babylon’s complete downfall, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, being overthrown as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, never being inhabited, neither dwelt in from generation to generation, wild beasts of the desert lying there, and their houses being full of doleful creatures, the time drawing near, and the days not being prolonged, closing with a promise that the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land, this extensive prophecy against Babylon anticipating its eventual, complete downfall centuries before it actually occurred.
Isaiah’s extensive, dramatic prophecy against Babylon, delivered centuries before that empire even rose to its eventual dominance and later, complete downfall, demonstrates prophecy’s genuine, forward-reaching scope extending well beyond the prophet’s own immediate historical moment. Its vivid, cosmic imagery, darkened stars and a shaking earth, communicates judgment’s genuine, world-altering seriousness through powerful poetic language rather than mere prosaic description.
