Isaiah declares, “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, and of the fear of the LORD,” describing how he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth.
Isaiah describes an astonishing vision of peace throughout creation, the wolf also dwelling with the lamb, and the leopard lying down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the fatling together, a little child leading them, the cow and the bear feeding, their young ones lying down together, the lion eating straw like the ox, the nursing child playing on the hole of the asp, declaring, “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”
Isaiah describes how in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people, to it shall the Gentiles seek, and his rest shall be glorious, the Lord setting His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, Egypt, and other lands, gathering the outcasts of Israel, and assembling the dispersed of Judah, closing with a description of the Lord destroying the tongue of the Egyptian sea, and dividing a highway for His people, this chapter’s beautiful vision of the Messiah’s peaceful reign extending hope far beyond Israel to encompass all creation and all nations together.
Isaiah’s stunning vision of natural predators peacefully coexisting with their traditional prey, the wolf with the lamb, the lion eating straw like the ox, offers one of Scripture’s most vivid pictures of creation’s ultimate restoration under the Messiah’s righteous reign. This chapter’s promise that the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea offers a beautifully comprehensive vision of genuine, universal transformation still awaited by faithful readers.
