Isaiah describes seven women taking hold of one man in that day, asking to be called by his name, to take away their reproach, describing a coming day when the “branch,” “tsemach” in Hebrew, of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth excellent and comely for those who have escaped in Israel.
Isaiah describes how those left in Zion, and those who remain in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, everyone who is written among the living in Jerusalem, when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from its midst, by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
Isaiah describes how the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night, since upon all the glory shall be a defense, and there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain, this brief chapter offering genuine, hopeful contrast to the previous chapter’s devastating judgment, a purified, protected remnant emerging from the very midst of coming devastation.
This brief chapter’s beautiful promise of a purified remnant, washed clean and specifically protected by God’s own presence like the cloud and fire of the wilderness journey, offers genuine hope emerging directly from the previous chapter’s severe judgment. Its image of the Lord’s branch being beautiful and glorious plants an early seed of messianic hope that will grow considerably throughout the rest of Isaiah’s extensive prophecy.
