Isaiah envisions a future of universal peace before warning against present pride and idolatry. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Isaiah 2.
Isaiah describes a vision of the last days, when the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it, many people saying, “Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD… for out of Zion shall go forth the “law,” “torah” in Hebrew, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”
Isaiah describes this coming era of peace, God judging among the nations, and rebuking many people, so they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks, nation not lifting up sword against nation, neither learning war anymore, urging the house of Jacob to walk in the light of the Lord.
Isaiah then turns to present reality, describing Judah as filled with idols, worshiping the work of their own hands, warning that the lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day, describing the day of the Lord coming upon everything proud and lofty, the idols being utterly abolished, people casting their idols of silver and gold to the moles and bats, going into the clefts of the rocks for fear of the Lord, closing with the warning to cease from man, whose breath is in his nostrils, for wherein is he to be accounted of.
Isaiah’s beautiful vision of swords beaten into plowshares offers one of Scripture’s most enduring images of hoped-for peace, nations no longer learning war, a vision that continues inspiring peacemaking efforts across every subsequent generation. His sharp turn to condemning present idolatry and pride shows this future hope was never meant to excuse complacency now, but to motivate genuine repentance in light of what God has promised.
