Isaiah, son of Amoz, records the vision he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, declaring, “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me,” describing an ox knowing its owner, and a donkey its master’s crib, but Israel not knowing, His people not considering.
Isaiah describes a sinful nation, a people laden with “iniquity,” “avon” in Hebrew, a seed of evildoers, children who are corrupters, who have forsaken the Lord, provoked the Holy One of Israel to anger, gone away backward, asking why they should be stricken any more, since they will revolt more and more, the whole head being sick, and the whole heart faint, from the sole of the foot even to the head there being no soundness in it, but wounds, bruises, and putrifying sores.
Isaiah delivers God’s striking rejection of empty ritual, “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD… Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me… your appointed feasts my soul hateth,” urging them instead to wash, make themselves clean, cease to do evil, learn to do well, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow, promising, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool,” closing with a warning that Jerusalem, once faithful, has become a harlot, but promising eventual restoration for those who repent, while rebels and sinners shall be destroyed together.
This opening chapter’s striking rejection of empty religious ritual, sacrifices and feasts God actually hates, without genuine justice and care for the vulnerable, establishes a central prophetic theme running throughout Isaiah, that authentic worship must be accompanied by authentic righteousness. Its beautiful invitation, come let us reason together, though your sins be as scarlet they shall be white as snow, offers genuine hope for cleansing even amid such serious, sustained rebellion.
