The bride wishes her beloved were like a brother who nursed at her mother’s breasts, so that finding him outside, she might kiss him, and none would despise her, describing how she would lead him, and bring him into her mother’s house, giving him spiced wine to drink, of the juice of her pomegranate, his left hand under her head, and his right hand embracing her, again charging the daughters of Jerusalem not to stir up nor awake her love until he please.
The bride describes one coming up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved, declaring she raised him up under the apple tree, where his mother brought him forth, urging him to set her as a “seal,” “chotam” in Hebrew, upon his heart, as a seal upon his arm, since love is strong as death, jealousy cruel as the grave, its coals being coals of fire, having a most vehement flame, many waters not being able to quench love, neither can the floods drown it, declaring that if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be condemned.
The chapter describes a little sister who has no breasts, wondering what should be done for her in the day when she shall be spoken for, describing a wall and a door, and Solomon having a vineyard at Baalhamon, letting out the vineyard to keepers, each bringing a thousand pieces of silver for its fruit, the bride declaring her own vineyard is before her, closing this remarkable book with the beloved asking to hear her voice, and the bride urging him to make haste, and be like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of spices, this poetic, beautiful conclusion celebrating love’s genuine, unquenchable, enduring power.
This closing chapter’s magnificent declaration, love is strong as death, its flame a most vehement flame that many waters cannot quench, offers one of Scripture’s most powerful statements about love’s genuine, unmatched intensity and endurance.
