The daughters of Jerusalem ask where her beloved has gone, that they may seek him with her, the bride responding that her beloved has gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies, declaring, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies,” this beautiful, mutual declaration reaffirming their complete belonging to one another even after the previous chapter’s difficult separation.
The beloved responds with extensive praise, comparing her to Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with “banners,” “degel” in Hebrew, asking her to turn away her eyes from him, for they have overcome him, again praising her hair, teeth, temples, describing sixty queens, and eighty concubines, and virgins without number, yet declaring his dove, his undefiled, is but one, the choice one of her mother, the daughters seeing her and blessing her, the queens and concubines also praising her.
The chapter describes the bride going down into the garden of nuts, to see the fruits of the valley, to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded, her soul making her like the chariots of Amminadib, closing with the daughters of Jerusalem calling for her to return, that they may look upon her, asking what they shall see in the Shulamite, as it were the company of two armies, this chapter’s renewed praise and reaffirmed mutual devotion following the previous chapter’s temporary difficulty, showing love’s genuine capacity for restoration.
