The Preacher urges his readers to remember now their Creator in the days of their youth, while the evil days do not come, nor the years draw near when they shall say they have no pleasure in them, describing in poetic, symbolic imagery the process of aging, the sun, light, moon, and stars being darkened, the keepers of the house trembling, the strong men bowing themselves, the grinders ceasing because they are few, and those who look out of the windows being darkened.
The Preacher continues this poetic description of decline, the doors being shut in the streets, the sound of the grinding being low, rising up at the voice of the bird, the daughters of music being brought low, fear being in the way, the almond tree flourishing, the grasshopper being a burden, and desire failing, since man goes to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets, before the silver “cord,” “chevel” in Hebrew, is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, then the dust returning to the earth as it was, and the spirit returning to God who gave it.
The Preacher declares, “Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity,” describing how he taught the people knowledge, giving good heed, and seeking out and setting in order many proverbs, seeking to find out acceptable words, and that which was written was upright, even words of truth, warning against making many books, and much study being a weariness of the flesh, closing with the entire book’s final, essential conclusion, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
This closing chapter’s beautiful, symbolic poem about aging offers a vivid, memorable way to contemplate mortality and physical decline without resorting to clinical or overly abstract language. After an entire book wrestling honestly with life’s genuine uncertainties and apparent futility, the Preacher’s final conclusion, fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man, offers a satisfying, grounding resolution, genuine meaning found not in solving every mystery, but in faithful reverence before the God who holds them all.
