The Preacher urges his readers to cast their bread upon the waters, for they shall find it after many days, giving a portion to seven, and also to eight, since they do not know what evil shall be upon the earth, describing how if the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth, and if a tree falls toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it shall be.
The Preacher observes that he who observes the wind shall not sow, and he who regards the clouds shall not reap, describing how they do not know the works of God who makes all, comparing this to not knowing the way of the spirit, nor how the “bones,” “etsem” in Hebrew, grow in the womb of her who is with child, urging them to sow their seed in the morning, and in the evening not withholding their hand, since they do not know whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
The Preacher declares truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun, urging his readers, if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all, yet to remember the days of darkness, since they shall be many, all that comes being vanity, urging young men to rejoice in their youth, and let their heart cheer them in the days of their youth, walking in the ways of their heart, and in the sight of their eyes, but knowing that for all these things God will bring them into judgment, closing with the encouragement to remove sorrow from their heart, and put away evil from their flesh, since childhood and youth are vanity.
