The Preacher asks who is as the wise man, and who knows the interpretation of a thing, a man’s wisdom making his face to shine, and the boldness of his face being changed, urging his readers to keep the king’s commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God, warning not to be hasty to go out of his sight, and not to stand in an evil thing, since he does whatever pleases him.
The Preacher observes that where the word of a king is, there is “power,” “shilton” in Hebrew, and who may say to him, what are you doing, whoever keeps the commandment shall feel no evil thing, and a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment, since to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him, since no man knows what shall be, for who can tell him when it shall be.
The Preacher observes that though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet surely he knows it shall be well with those who fear God, but it shall not be well with the wicked, describing a vanity done upon the earth, that there be just men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked, and wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous, closing with the observation that though a man labors to seek out the work of God, yet he shall not find it, and though a wise man thinks to know it, yet he shall not be able to find it, this chapter honestly wrestling with the genuine mystery of why justice does not always seem to operate as expected.
The Preacher’s honest acknowledgment that justice does not always operate as expected, righteous men sometimes suffering while wicked men sometimes prosper, refuses to offer easy, simplistic answers to genuinely difficult questions about divine justice. His counsel to obey rightful authority while acknowledging life’s genuine mysteries models mature faith that can act wisely within uncertainty rather than demanding complete understanding before proceeding faithfully.
