The Preacher declares a good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one’s birth, better being to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting, since that is the end of all men, and the living will lay it to his heart, sorrow being better than laughter, since by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
The Preacher observes that the heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth, better being to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools, urging patience of spirit over pride of spirit, warning not to be hasty in one’s spirit to be angry, since anger rests in the bosom of fools, asking not why the former days were better than these, since it is not out of “wisdom,” “chokmah” in Hebrew, that one inquires this.
The Preacher urges his readers to consider the work of God, since who can make that straight which He has made crooked, in the day of prosperity being joyful, but in the day of adversity considering that God has set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him, closing with a sober reflection on wisdom and human frailty, declaring that he found one man among a thousand, but a woman among all those he has not found, concluding that God has made man upright, but they have sought out many inventions.
The Preacher’s counterintuitive preference for the house of mourning over the house of feasting suggests that genuine reflection on mortality often produces more lasting wisdom than fleeting, superficial celebration alone. His caution against nostalgically assuming former days were better than present ones warns against a common but ultimately unhelpful tendency to romanticize the past rather than genuinely engaging with present reality.
