The Preacher describes an evil which he has seen under the sun, common among men, a man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not power to eat of it, but a stranger eats it, this being vanity, and an evil “disease,” “choli” in Hebrew.
The Preacher describes how if a man begets a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also has no burial, he says an untimely birth is better than he, though it comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness, asking what advantage the wise man has more than the fool, or what has the poor who knows to walk before the living.
The Preacher observes that all the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled, since what has the wise more than the fool, what has the poor who knows to walk before the living, better being the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire, this also being vanity and vexation of spirit, closing with the observation that whatever a man is, has already been named, and it is known that he is man, and that man cannot contend with Him who is mightier than he, since who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow.
The Preacher’s troubling observation, that a man could possess enormous wealth yet lack the very capacity to genuinely enjoy it, reveals that mere possession alone never guarantees actual satisfaction or fulfillment. His honest acknowledgment that human appetite and desire never reach a natural, permanent point of complete satisfaction offers sobering insight into why chasing fulfillment through accumulation alone consistently proves genuinely insufficient.
