The Preacher urges his readers to keep their foot when they go to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools, since they do not know they do evil, warning not to be rash with their mouth, nor let their heart be hasty to utter anything before God, since God is in heaven, and they upon earth, therefore let their “words,” “davar” in Hebrew, be few.
The Preacher warns that when they vow a vow to God, they should not defer to pay it, since He has no pleasure in fools, better it being that they should not vow, than that they should vow and not pay, describing how in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities, urging them instead to fear God.
The Preacher observes that if they see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, they should not marvel at the matter, since he who is higher than the highest regards it, and there are higher than they, describing how he who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance with increase, this also being vanity, the sleep of a laboring man being sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich not allowing him to sleep, closing with the observation that it is good and comely for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor that he takes under the sun, all the days of his life which God gives him, since this is his portion.
The Preacher’s caution to keep one’s foot when entering God’s house and let words be few reminds worshipers that genuine reverence values thoughtful, sparing speech over careless, hasty religious talk. His observation that abundance robs the rich man of sleep, while the laborer rests peacefully regardless of how much or little he has, offers a counterintuitive but genuinely observed truth about wealth’s surprising capacity to disturb rather than guarantee genuine peace.
