The Preacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem, declares, “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity,” asking what profit a man has from all his labor which he takes under the sun, describing one generation passing away, and another generation coming, but the earth abiding forever.
The Preacher describes the sun also arising, and the sun going down, hastening to the place where it arose, the wind going toward the south, and turning about unto the north, whirling continually, all rivers running into the sea, yet the sea not being full, unto the place from where the rivers come, there they return again, all things being full of “labor,” “amal” in Hebrew, man not being able to utter it.
The Preacher declares he gave his heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, this sore travail God has given to the sons of man to be exercised by it, having seen all the works done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit, that which is crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is wanting cannot be numbered, describing how in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow, this opening chapter establishing the book’s honest, searching tone as it wrestles with life’s apparent futility when viewed merely from an earthly perspective.
The Preacher’s blunt opening declaration, vanity of vanities, all is vanity, sets an unusually honest, searching tone rarely found elsewhere in Scripture, refusing to offer easy, comfortable answers before genuinely wrestling with life’s real difficulties first. His observation that increased wisdom brings increased sorrow acknowledges an uncomfortable truth, that greater understanding often reveals more clearly just how much genuinely remains beyond human control or comprehension.
