Solomon warns against boasting of tomorrow, since one does not know what a day may bring forth, urging another to praise him, and not his own mouth, a stranger, and not his own lips, describing wrath as cruel, and anger outrageous, but who is able to stand before “envy,” “qinah” in Hebrew.
Solomon declares open rebuke being better than secret love, faithful being the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy being deceitful, famously observing that as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend, urging his readers not to forsake their own friend, nor their father’s friend, and not to go into their brother’s house in the day of their calamity, since a neighbor near being better than a brother far off.
Solomon closes with observations about diligence, urging his readers to be diligent to know the state of their flocks, and look well to their herds, since riches are not forever, and does the crown endure to every generation, describing how the hay appears, and the tender grass shows itself, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered, closing with practical instructions about caring well for one’s flocks and household provisions, this chapter’s recurring themes of honest friendship and diligent stewardship offering practical wisdom for maintaining genuine, lasting relationships and resources.
