Solomon urges his readers not to be envious against evil men, neither desiring to be with them, since their heart studies destruction, and their lips talk of mischief, through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established, and by “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
Solomon urges rescuing those drawn toward death, and holding back those ready to be slain, warning that if they say they did not know it, He who ponders the heart considers it, and He who keeps the soul, He knows it, and shall He not render to every man according to his works, urging his son to eat honey, since it is good, and the honeycomb, which is sweet to his taste.
Solomon closes with a warning against laying wait against the dwelling of the righteous, and spoiling his resting place, since a just man falls seven times, and rises up again, but the wicked shall fall into mischief, urging his readers not to rejoice when their enemy falls, lest the Lord see it and it displease Him, closing with the famous observation about the sluggard’s field, overgrown with thorns and nettles, its stone wall broken down, teaching that a little sleep, a little slumber, brings poverty as one who travels, and want as an armed man.
Solomon’s instruction to rescue those being led toward death, refusing the excuse of claimed ignorance, insists that genuine moral responsibility includes active intervention on behalf of the vulnerable rather than passive, convenient non-involvement. His observation that a just man falls seven times yet rises again offers genuine encouragement that righteous character involves resilient recovery from repeated setback rather than flawless, unbroken success.
