The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Knowledge” it comes from the Hebrew Word “da’at” which means “knowledge.”
Solomon warns against greed, excess, and moral compromise while pleading for genuine devotion. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Proverbs 23.
Solomon warns against being desirous of a ruler’s dainties, since they are deceitful meat, urging his readers not to labor to be rich, and to cease from their own wisdom, warning that riches certainly make themselves wings, and fly away as an eagle toward heaven, warning against eating the bread of him who has an evil eye, neither desiring his dainty meats, since as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
Solomon warns against removing the old landmark, and entering into the fields of the fatherless, since their redeemer is mighty, He shall plead their cause with them, urging application of the heart to instruction, and the ears to the words of “knowledge,” “da’at” in Hebrew, withholding not correction from a child, since beating him with the rod shall not kill him, but shall deliver his soul from hell.
Solomon warns extensively against drunkenness, describing the woes, sorrow, contentions, babbling, wounds without cause, and redness of eyes that come to those who tarry long at the wine, warning that at the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder, closing this chapter with a deeply personal plea, “My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways,” expressing a father’s genuine longing not merely for his son’s outward compliance, but for his authentic, wholehearted devotion.
Solomon’s tender plea, my son, give me your heart, reveals that genuine parental instruction ultimately seeks authentic, wholehearted relationship rather than mere outward behavioral compliance alone. His extended, vivid warning against drunkenness, describing its physical and social consequences in unflinching detail, models how specific, concrete description can teach moral caution more effectively than vague, generalized warning.
