The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Iniquity” it comes from the Hebrew Word “avon” which means “iniquity.”
Solomon values reputation and character while closing this section with thirty specific sayings of the wise. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Proverbs 22.
Solomon declares, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold,” the rich and poor meeting together, the Lord being the maker of them all, a prudent man foreseeing evil and hiding himself, but the simple passing on and being punished.
Solomon declares famously, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it,” the rich ruling over the poor, and the borrower being servant to the lender, he who sows “iniquity,” “avon” in Hebrew, shall reap vanity, and the rod of his anger shall fail, he who has a bountiful eye shall be blessed, since he gives of his bread to the poor.
Solomon closes this first major section of Proverbs urging his readers to bow down their ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply their heart to his knowledge, since it is a pleasant thing if they keep them within them, that they may be fitted in their lips, that their trust may be in the Lord, warning against removing the ancient landmark set by their fathers, and observing that a man skillful in his work shall stand before kings, closing this section by beginning what scholars recognize as a distinct collection of thirty specific sayings of the wise, offering practical guidance for navigating relationships with the powerful and wealthy.
Solomon’s declaration that a good name is more valuable than great riches offers a counter-cultural priority, insisting genuine character and reputation matter more than mere material accumulation. His famous instruction to train up a child in the way he should go provides enduring, foundational wisdom for parenting, emphasizing deliberate, intentional formation during formative years as genuinely consequential for lasting character.
