The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Glory” it comes from the Hebrew Word “tiferet” which means “glory, beauty.”
Solomon addresses integrity, patience, and genuine compassion toward the poor. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Proverbs 19.
Solomon declares better is the poor who walks in his integrity, than he who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool, also that the soul be without knowledge is not good, and he who hastens with his feet sins, the foolishness of man perverting his way, and his heart fretting against the Lord, wealth making many friends, but the poor being separated from his neighbor.
Solomon declares famously, “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again,” instructing his son, that he may be wise in his latter end, describing how the discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his “glory,” “tiferet” in Hebrew, to pass over a transgression, house and riches being the inheritance of fathers, but a prudent wife being from the Lord.
Solomon closes describing how a man’s heart devises his way, but the Lord directs his steps, that which is desired in a man is his kindness, and a poor man being better than a liar, the fear of the Lord tending to life, and he who has it shall abide satisfied, urging his son to hear counsel, and receive instruction, that he may be wise in his latter end, closing with encouragement toward diligent, honest labor and genuine compassion toward those in need, since the Lord Himself considers such generosity a loan made directly to Him.
Solomon’s striking declaration that pity shown to the poor is effectively a loan made directly to the Lord Himself elevates genuine compassion toward genuine, tangible investment with God, who personally guarantees its repayment. His observation that a man’s heart devises his way while the Lord directs his steps, echoing similar teaching found in chapter sixteen, reinforces this theme’s genuine importance through deliberate repetition across the collection.
