Solomon describes how a man who has separated himself seeks his own desire, and intermeddles with all wisdom, a fool not delighting in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself, a fool’s mouth being his destruction, and his lips being the snare of his soul, the “words,” “davar” in Hebrew, of a man’s mouth being as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
Solomon declares death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat the fruit thereof, whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord, a man who has friends must show himself friendly, and there being a friend who sticks closer than a brother, describing how a brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, and their contentions being like the bars of a castle.
Solomon closes declaring famously, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe,” a rich man’s wealth being his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit, before destruction the heart of man being haughty, and before honor being humility, he who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him, closing with the observation that the spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit who can bear.
Solomon’s memorable declaration, the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe, offers genuine, accessible reassurance that real security ultimately comes from trusting God rather than from any earthly resource, however impressive it might seem. His observation that death and life are in the power of the tongue reminds every reader just how consequential speech actually is, capable of genuinely building up or genuinely destroying others.
