Solomon declares the preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, are from the Lord, all the ways of a man being clean in his own eyes, but the Lord weighing the spirits, urging his readers to commit their works to the Lord, and their thoughts shall be established, the Lord having made all things for Himself, yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.
Solomon declares by “mercy,” “chesed” in Hebrew, and truth iniquity is purged, and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil, when a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him, better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right, a man’s heart devising his way, but the Lord directing his steps, a divine sentence being in the lips of the king, his mouth not transgressing in judgment.
Solomon closes declaring pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall, better it being to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud, he who handles a matter wisely shall find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he, the hoary head being a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness, he who is slow to anger being better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city, closing with the observation that the lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord.
Solomon’s teaching that a man’s heart devises his way, but the Lord directs his steps, holds together genuine human planning and divine sovereignty without collapsing either into the other, both remain genuinely real and operative together. His famous warning that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall offers a memorable, often-quoted caution against the particular danger overconfidence poses to sustained success.
